A Delhi man bent against going back to jail managed to swivel around in the back of a patrol car and kick out the driver’s side window, according to authorities.
Augustine Lozano Ayala, 48, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of violating terms of his parole by carrying a concealed knife, officials said. He said he didn't want to go back to jail and said deputies would have to hurt him badly to get him back there, Merced County Deputy Tom MacKenzie said.
He said Ayala was put in additional restraints and booked at the Merced County Jail on suspicion of the weapons charge and felony vandalism. He said Ayala is on suicide watch at the jail.
The glass costs $300 to replace, MacKenzie said, but it could cost up to $2,000 to fix the window if the frame and window lining also are damaged.
