District Attorney promises to hold parents responsible for tagging teens

The writing is on the wall: Inattentive parents will be held responsible for their tagging teenagers. In an effort to combat an increase in graffiti, parents will regularly be ordered to paint over vandalism and pickup garbage along with their children.

“Parents need to be more engaged in what their kids are doing,” Merced County District Attorney Larry Morse II said. “We as taxpayers shouldn’t be responsible for the fact that parents aren’t exercising control.”

Morse and other law enforcement leaders met Monday to renew their effort to combat a problem that they say discourages business and harms the city and county’s reputation. They believe that holding the parents accountable and publicizing convictions will help reverse a trend that’s blighted the area
