Big-rig carrying chickens overturns on highway

A truck with a 53-foot trailer hauling crates of chickens overturned on Highway 152 west of Los Banos last night and set the birds loose on the road.

The 11:05 p.m. accident took four or five hours to clear, said officer Mike Panelli with the California Highway Patrol. He said the driver, Turner Adams, 24, of Exeter, wasn't injured.

Officers suspect he took the interchange from Interstate I-5 too fast and ended up overturning at the bottom of the ramp, Panelli said. The accident closed one of two eastbound lanes.

Officers said the chilly temperature made the chickens easier to catch. They just stood in the road. None were run over.
