Public school campuses might look like parks, but Senator Jeff Denham (R-Merced) says it can be troublesome to use them that way. “Currently, the law forbids a parent and child from flying a kite on a school field,” he said.
If Senate Bill 1347 is passed however, that could all change. The bill, being sponsored by the Merced Union High School District, would allow school district boards to designate areas of its campuses as ‘school park property.’
“We don’t have enough park space in California,” said MUHSD Superintendent Bob Fore. “This is an obvious solution to a serious need.”
So why hasn’t it been done before? Fore said state law requires school districts to regulate the use of their facilities “or face great liability risks.”
