Grass fire burns 30 acres, two buildings

4:30 p.m.: A grass fire that started when a lawnmower sparked burned more than 30 acres and destroyed two buildings, according to Cal Fire officials.

The fire started in a field near homes Alfalfa and Yale streets in rural southeast Merced. Fire officials said a man was mowing down weeds when the lawnmower hit a metal wire, igniting the dry brush.

No injuries have been reported.

3:02 p.m.: Firefighters are responding to a large grass fire near Mission Avenue and Highway 99.
