A truck loaded with crushed wrecked cars hit four donkeys on Highway 152 south of Chowchilla this morning.
The donkeys were fatally injured and the eastbound lanes were closed for several hours. One lane was reopened shortly after 7 a.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident was reported at 3:41 a.m. near Berenda Slough just west of Highway 99 when the big rig, traveling west, hit the donkeys and then came to rest on its side on the eastbound lanes, spilling its load of wrecked cars.

Officers said another vehicle, traveling east on 152, crashed into the wreckage.
The big rig driver and a person in the other car suffered minor injuries, officers said.
Eastbound traffic was diverted to Highway 233 to Chowchilla to 99.
