A man is in custody after allegedly leading Merced police on a pursuit through the Loughborough area — with his wife and kids inside the car.
Police arrested suspect Moses Shy Gonzalez, 31, of Merced on suspicion of violation of parole, driving under the influence, evading police, driving on a suspended license and child endangerment.
Merced police said the incident happened around 10:32 p.m. on Tuesday, after Officer Emily Christensen was stopped at a traffic light at Olive and Meadows avenues. While waiting at the light, Christensen saw a 1990 white Mercury Cougar drive across the intersection — nearly hitting a light pole.
Although Christensen tried to stop the vehicle, the driver of the car failed to yield, police said. Gonzalez drove through Denver Avenue and several other streets at 50 miles per hour, police said. He drove down Conestoga Avenue, driving eastbound in the westbound lanes and stopped his car, police said.
After Gonzalez stopped his car, police said he then fled on foot, leaving his wife and two children (who are 1 and 2 years old) inside the car. Officers Kennon Sayachak and Mike Gallegos then arrived at the scene and Gonzalez was eventually located and arrested on the 3100 block of Meadows Avenue.
He was booked into the Merced County Mail Jail, where he remains without bail.
