A Merced man was arrested after a sheriff's deputy saw him using his truck to pull his 11-year-old cousin on a mattress.
Deputy Dustin Witt of the Merced Sheriff’s Tactical and Reconnaissance Team was in the area of Esplanade Drive around 3 p.m. on Wednesday when he saw Christopher Rodas, 19, pulling his 11-year-old cousin on a box spring mattress through traffic.
Witt watched Rodas pull the boy for approximately three to four blocks, driving at approximately 35 miles per hour, the sheriff's department said in a press release. Rodas told Witt they found the mattress on the side of the road.
Rodas was booked on child endangerment and remains in Merced County Jail on $50,000 bail.
