Convicted child molester slashes own throat, investigators say

Convicted child molester Ignacio Vargas was rushed to Mercy Merced Medical Center on Friday after he allegedly slashed his own throat, Merced County Sheriff’s investigators said.

Sheriff’s spokesman Tom MacKenzie said correctional officers discovered Vargas, 41, with the injuries in his cell at the John Latorraca Correctional Center around 5:30 a.m.

Vargas apparently cut himself with a blade from a disposable razor, MacKenzie said.

MacKenzie said the officers were preparing to transport him to Deuel Vocational Institution when he was found. His condition at this time is unknown.

Vargas, 41, was sentenced earlier this month to 588 years behind bars. He was convicted by a Merced County jury last month on 37 counts of molesting a girl from July 2005 until 2007. The victim was 8-years-old when the abuse began.
