Searchers find hiker, 71, missing since Sunday

A 71-year-old woman and her dog, who went missing Sunday after they went out for a daily walk near Wagner's Mammoth Pool Resort, were found safe this morning, ending an extensive search led by the Madera County Sheriff's Department.

Ruth Elaine Terry and her dog, Mopps, were found shortly after 10 a.m. about 200 yards from where they had started out Sunday, but in the opposite direction from where she was believed to have gone for her walk, sheriff's spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

Terry appears to be "OK," but she is being transported to an emergency health clinic in Oakhurst to be examined, Stuart said.

Terry and the dog reportedly survived on water from area springs as they wandered lost in the rugged terrain, covered with thick brush, she said.

Terry reportedly changed her regular route Sunday when taking her walk on a hill, turning right, away from her regular direction, and got turned around.
