Fight at Merced jail leads to inmate death

An inmate at the John Latorraca Correctional Center is dead, after a fight Sunday, according to the Merced County Sheriff's Department.

The inmate has been identified as 38-year-old Craig McBride of Merced.

Sgt. Jason Goins of the department's Major Crimes Unit said the fight happened between McBride and another inmate around 7 p.m. in a dorm housing 25 inmates. Goins said McBride collapsed during the fight, and correctional officers responded and administered aid. Despite the efforts to save McBride, he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards, Goins said.

McBride was being held at the jail on suspicion of violating a court order. He was also wanted on a stolen property warrant in Tuolumne County.
