Second person dies as a result of crash that killed Delhi man

MODESTO -- A second man involved in a crash last week near Ceres died at a Modesto hospital Monday, Stanislaus County coroner officials said Tuesday. Arnoldo Chavez Jr., 22, of Modesto, was taken by ambulance shortly after the Jan. 5 crash to Doctors Medical Center.

Chavez was driving a 2006 red Honda S2000 sports car, and Saul Avalos, 20, of Delhi was a passenger in the car, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash occurred about 2:15 p.m. on Crows Landing Road, just south of East Service Road.

The CHP reported that Chavez tried to pass slower-moving traffic heading south on Crows Landing when he lost control of the car and spun into the northbound lane. A 2007 Chevrolet pickup, driven north on Crows Landing by Troy Delgado, 29, of Turlock, smashed into the back of the Honda, according to the CHP. Avalos was pronounced dead at the scene. Delgado had minor injuries.
