Two cows were killed and approximately 30 escaped onto the highway when a cattle truck overturned at Los Banos just before noon Wednesday.

The California Highway Patrol said that the driver, Charles Quiring, 46, of La Grange, attempted to take the eastbound Highway 152 offramp at an unsafe speed and overturned the trailer onto its left side. Approximately 30 head of cattle escaped and ran around on Highway 152 and Interstate 5. The offramp was closed as rescuers rounded up the cattle.

The CHP dispatched a number of officers to the scene for traffic control and local veterinarians and cattleman assisted with offloading the remaining 40 head of cattle.Quiring was not injured.
