Sheriff Mark Pazin said the department plans to donate $30,000 of asset seizure money from the Merced Sheriff’s Office to the United Way Foundation.
The money will then be earmarked to help the Merced Rescue Mission in the face of a struggling economy and state-funded cutbacks. Pazin said the donation was to keep the mission providing a necessary service because funds are being cut as the number of homeless rise.
He added that the contribution wasn’t a “permanent fix,” but was intended to help see the mission through hard times until the economy improves and state funding returns to previous levels.
