Atwater Police found a dead man in an open field Friday afternoon.
The man is believed to have been living in a tent on the land near the 200 block of East Bellevue Road. He had lived out there for eight months, said a friend who declined to give his name.
Police responded to the scene shortly after 3 p.m., said Atwater Police spokesman Armando Echevarria.
They found an unresponsive white man, approximately 59 years old.
“There are no signs of any foul play, however the incident is still being investigated,” Echevaria said.
The man’s identity could not be confirmed until his family was notified.
The man was found by his friend, who called police after trying to administer CPR.
The deceased mean had been complaining about feeling cold, sweaty and light-headed earlier in the day, his friend said.
The body was turned over to the Merced County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy Friday afternoon.
