Man beaten with baseball bats when he refuses to give up wallet

A man walking in Southeast Merced was accosted Tuesday night by four people with baseball bats, according to the Merced Police Department.

The man was walking near Ellen and Merced avenues late Tuesday when a newer-model white or gray Honda pulled over near him. Three men and a woman, two of them holding baseball bats, got out of the car and approached the man, police said. The suspects demanded his wallet. When he refused, they hit him in the side of the head with the baseball bat, near his left eye. He fell to the ground, unconscious. When he woke up, he was still bleeding, but was able to walk to a nearby house and ask for help.

The man was treated by medical staff and was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced for treatment. He was taken by air to a Modesto hospital on Wednesday morning. He is listed in stable condition with head trauma, and is expected to recover, police said.
