Caltrans: Interstate 5 rest area in Merced County to remain closed through March 31

Caltrans extended the closure of John "Chuck" Erreca State Rest Area on northbound and southbound I-5 in Merced County through March 31.

The agency said crews will be replacing the water filtration system at the water treatment plant on the northbound side of the rest area, which will be without water.

The rest area will be unavailable to motorists and the public during the work.

The agency also said it would close the right and auxiliary lanes on northbound Highway 99 from the Childs Avenue overcrossing to teh 15th Street undercrossing.

Bridge inspections will occur from 9 p.m. March 26 till 4 a.m. March 27. Motorists should expect five-minute delays, and alternate routes taken if possible.

Caltrans also announced work it will do on Highway 59 in the county. The left and right lanes will alternately close on southbound 59 at 13th Street from 7:30 p.m. March 24 to 5:30 a.m. March 25.

The left and right lanes on northbound 59 at the intersection of West Olive Avenue and Santa Fe Drive will also alternately close. Work will begin at 7 p.m., March 24, and end at 6 a.m. March 25.

Motorists can expect five-minute delays and should try to take alternate routes if possible.
