Police seeking possible attempted kidnapper

Police are looking for a man who may have tried to pick up a 12-year-old female student walking home from Weaver Elementary School on Tuesday afternoon. The girl told officers that she had walked with friends from the school to a 7-11 convenience store. From there, she walked alone to her home. She was walking on the north side of East Gerard Avenue, when a compact green truck pulled up to the curb next to her.

Police said the driver called out "Hey pretty girl. You want to get in my car? I'll take you for a ride."

The girl turned away from the vehicle and ran towards her home. She got on her cell phone and called her grandfather.

The man was Hispanic and was wearing a blue beanie and sunglasses, but the girl was not able to provide additional information, police said.

Weaver School officials were notified and parents are being encouraged by police to walk their children home or to have them walk with friends.

Anyone with information may call Detective Sergeant Scott Skinner at (209) 385-4702 or the Merced Police Department Tipster Line at (209) 385-4725.
