Merced-area baseball stars selected in MLB draft

Buhach Colony senior Dylan Floro was selected in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft on Wednesday afternoon by the Tampa Bay Rays. He was the 619th overall pick. Floro was taken by the same organization that picked family friend and former BC star Jacob Jeffries in the third round last June. One MLB blogger, Adam Seiler, projected Floro as a first-day selection -- No. 111 to the Houston Astros.

Merced College sophomore Bradin Hagens was selected with the 186th pick of the MLB amateur draft on Wednesday morning by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Hagens, a fourth-round selection, was 9-1 with a 3.77 ERA and 87 strikeouts in 88.1 innings as the Blue Devils’ staff ace this season. He was a two-time all-Central Valley Conference selection and a 2009 all-NorCal pick during his time at Merced College. The 6-foot-1 right-hander is no stranger to the draft process.

He was taken with the 1,105th pick in the 37th round of last June by the Kansas City Royals, considered a draft-and-follow selection.

He has until Aug. 15 to negotiate a deal with the Diamondbacks. If contract talks stall, Hagens would likely uphold his commitment to play at Oklahoma State next season. -- James Burns, Sports Editor Follow the coverage here at:
