Inmate's jaw broken over Michael Jackson remark

A 21-year-old inmate at the John Latorraca Correctional Center in Merced is in the hospital with a broken jaw, after he was allegedly attacked by another inmate for supposedly making a crack about Michael Jackson.

Merced County Sheriff's deputies say inmate Jeffery Salery, 50, will be charged with battery and causing great bodily injuries for assaulting the victim at the jail around 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.

Although it's unknown what the victim allegedly said, Salery admitted to correctional officers that he became angered after the man "disrespected Michael Jackson," MacKenzie said.

The victim was taken to a hospital in Modesto. Salery is also being held at the jail on narcotics charges. His bail is $100,000.

Jackson, one of the most internationally popular performers and recording artists of all time, died a week ago today in Los Angeles.
