The Friends of Merced County Fair said they have appointed Rob Weimer as committee chair for a $2 million fundraising effort to build a 140-foot-by -340-foot clear-span barn and make other improvements to the Merced County Fairgrounds.
Weimer, of American Ag Credit in Merced, will head the newly formed Barn Raising Capital Campaign Committee, comprised of volunteers who want to see the hog and sheep barns torn down after next year’s Merced County Fair.
So far, the committee includes Les McCabe, Melba Miyamoto, Barbara Burroughs, Kevin Schoonhoven, Jim Cunningham, Kim Rogina, Janet Taylor, Jim Anderson, Barbara Matheron, Carol Silva and Doreen Snyder.
On its way to the $2 million goal, the committee said it would start with over $100,000 raised through charter membership to Friends of Merced County Fair. Also included are donations from the Merced County Board of Supervisors, the Merced River Ag Boosters Association, the Community Foundation of Merced, the Hilmar/Stevinson Ag Boosters, Club Mercedes and others.
Friends of Merced County Fair, Inc., said it is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit formed in 2008 to facilitate improvements to the Merced County Fairgrounds. Through membership fees, charitable donations, grants and fundraisers, the group said it will invest in the beautification and long-term development of the fair.
