National Night Out said it would hold its annual crime and drug prevention event Tuesday night from 5:30 to 8 in Applegate Park near Kiddieland.
Admission is free.
The event celebrates Neighborhood Watch and the partnership between Merced residents and local public safety officers, organizers said.
Last year’s National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 15,000 communities in all 50 states. Some 37 million people participated.

Organizers said the event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
The event is jointly sponsored by the Merced Community Action Network, the city of Merced, the Merced Police and Fire Departments, Kiwanis of Greater Merced and Target Stores.
Organizers said they would hand out this year's Safe Neighborhood award.
