Victims in alleged big-rig hit-run identified as Chowchilla men

The Fresno County coroner this morning identified the four Chowchilla men killed Monday in an alleged hit-and-run collision involving a tractor-trailer rig and a car. Dead are the driver of the Honda, Jose Menjivar, 25; and passengers Wilfredo Lopez, age unknown, Angel Nunez, 39, and his brother, Nelson Nunez, age unknown. A 23-year-old woman was injured and taken to Community Regional Medical Center. The California Highway Patrol said the big rig, hauling two trailers, was driven by Hector Escalante, 35, of Modesto. Escalante ran a stop sign on Oakland Avenue at Lassen Avenue, near Five Points, just after 5 a.m., authorities said. The big rig drove into the path of the Honda, which was southbound on Lassen. The CHP said Escalante fled after the collision to Modesto, where he was arrested.
