Merced College to host White House education forum

Now both Merced County colleges are awash in the White House glow.

Officials announced Tuesday that Merced College will host an open forum with the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans later this month.

UC Merced is sponsoring the forum with the help of local school districts, and Merced College will host the event at its downtown Business Resource Center.

The public is invited to participate in one of two sessions – from 1:30 to 3 p.m. or 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. – on Friday, Aug. 21.

The White House Initiative has been hosting similar meetings around the country in an effort to allow people to explain how they think educational attainment in the Latino community could be improved and how the White House could spearhead changes, spokeswoman Glorimar Nosal said.

The initiative was created in 2001 by President George W. Bush, according to an Education Department Web site.

RSVPs are required for the event and must be submitted by Aug. 19. To reserve a space at one of the sessions, contact Stacy Kellner at (209) 384-6100 or Stacey.Kellner@mccd.edu.
