The gap between how life is lived by young people and the adults with the power is wide. One of the main priorities mentioned by Merced County's leadership is public safety.
And much treasure is spent on law enforcement. But ongoing violence -- there have been 13 killed this year in Merced County -- doesn't seem to be a priority for local leaders.
Three of those victims were under 18.

This week "Off the 99" brought in a few kids working for the Boy & Girls Club of Merced County to talk about what life is like for them and how much they fear walking down the street.
