The California Highway Patrol said about 2,200 pounds of citric anhydrous acid in granulated form was spilled Wednesday on Highway 152 east of the Romero's visitor center when a Freightliner truck overturned.
The left lane was closed for about 10 hours while the acid was cleaned up, although CHP said traffic "wasn't adversely affected."
The driver of the truck, Thanh Nguyen, 52, of San Jose, was heading east on Highway 152 at an undetermined rate of speed, the CHP said in a news release. While he was trying to negotiate a right-hand curve, Nguyen lost control of his rig, it traveled onto the center median and overturned, the agency reported.
Nguyen was taken to Los Banos Memorial Hospital with major injuries to one hand, but was otherwise in good condition, said CHP officer Jesse Lopez.
The CHP didn't report whether alcohol was involved in the 6:50 a.m. incident.
