Merced police use Taser to stop man's assault on pregnant girlfriend

A Merced man was arrested Monday after he allegedly assaulted his pregnant girlfriend in front of police officers.

Merced police officers Mike Gallegos and Nathan McKinnon arrived at the scene in the 2000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way around 7 p.m. after police dispatchers received a call about domestic violence. When they arrived, they saw Kyle Martin, 25, grab the victim and throw her to the ground. Officer Gallegos turned on his in-car video system to record the incident, police said.

Officer Gallegos ordered Martin to stay away from the woman, but he continued to assault her, police said. After repeated warnings to stop the assault, the officers used a Taser to subdue Martin.

Police say the woman was five months pregnant and also had a warrant for her arrest. She was treated at Mercy Medical Center and booked into Merced County Jail on the warrant.

Martin was also medically cleared at the hospital before being booked into the jail on suspicion of domestic violence and resisting arrest.
