City rivalries renewed on court, mat

City bragging rights will be on the line tonight on the court and on the mat.

The Golden Valley boys basketball team travels to Merced tonight at 7:15 in a key Central California Conference game.

Merced (3-0 CCC, 10-7) sits all alone atop the conference.

GV (2-1, 15-3) needs a win to pull even.

"It's always fun," Golden Valley coach Keith Hunter said. "It'll be a game the kids remember for a long time.

"When you get older, you don't remember all the games. This will be one they remember."

The game was sold out by Tuesday afternoon.

Don't expect to see any gimmick defenses from GV as it tries to slow down Merced star Allen Huddleston.

"The temptation is always there to pull something from your hat," Hunter said.

"But we're good, too. It's not like we're a 20-point underdog."

Meanwhile, Atwater (0-4, 5-13) will host Buhach Colony (0-3, 9-9) as both teams try to nail down their first CCC win.

The Golden Valley wrestling team will try to keep its stranglehold over Merced.

Chopper Mello's boys have defeated Merced eight straight times.

The two teams square off at Golden Valley at 7 p.m.

The Buhach Colony and Atwater wrestling teams will also be taking the mat tonight at the Thunder Dome at 7 p.m.
