Former high school sports commissioner Coover dies

Former Sac-Joaquin Section commissioner Clarke Coover, who ran the section out of his Modesto insurance office from 1968-1993, died on Saturday in Montana.

Believed to have been in his early 80s, Coover died after a lengthy illness, according to Will DeBoard, director of communications for the Sac-Joaquin Section.

The Sac-Joaquin Section is the governing body of high school sports in the Northern San Joaquin Valley.

Recently named to the section's inaugural Hall of Fame class, Coover was the section's second commissioner. He replaced James Cave (1942-68) and was eventually replaced by current commissioner Pete Saco.

The family is asking that any cards be mailed to: Pauline Coover and family, 2550 Primrose Lane, Helena, Montana 59601.

The family also said it will be establishing a scholarship through the section office.

Details of his death, and his age, were no immediately available.
