OK, so not yet.
A grass-roots campaign to get Allen Huddleston into Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" is building steam. A University of the Pacific fan site -- Pacific Tigers Sports (pacifictigerssports.yuku.com) -- has been casting votes for the Merced star for nearly a week now.
Huddleston, the state's second-leading scorer this past season at 31.5 points per game, will attend Pacific in the fall on a basketball scholarship.
Faces in the Crowd is a popular section of one of the world's foremost sports magazines, highlighting the accomplishments and careers of athletes, both young and old. To receive the honor, an athlete must be nominated.
The more nominations, the better, said Jon Ralston, owner/operator of Pacific Tigers Sports. Ralston nominated Huddleston over the weekend, writing: "Allen Huddleston a 6-0 combo guard from Merced High has had a tremendous senior season for the Bears. The University of the Pacific-bound senior guard was the state's No. 2 scorer at 31.5 points a game and set school career scoring record with 2,117 points, breaking record set by Gerald Madkins (UCLA, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors) 22 years ago. Allen scored 30 or more points in 18 games. He was the best against the best, including a 50 point outburst against UCLA-bound Reeves Nelson of Modesto Christian."
