I guess Chris Pedretti can't get everything right this spring. After a lengthy discussion about how the Merced College baseball team had likely plateaued at No. 4 in the NorCal rankings, his Blue Devils received a pleasant surprise before their 13-7 victory over College of the Sequoias on Thursday.
Despite perfect weeks from Ohlone, Diablo Valley and Feather River, MC leapfrogged Feather River, taking over as Northern California's third ranked team. The Blue Devils were on the move in the ABCA Pacific Division poll as well, moving up three spots to No. 9. The poll includes all of California as well as other Northwest junior colleges.
The rankings are as high as MC has been in almost two decades. With Ohlone and Diablo Valley safely running away with their conferences, Pedretti doesn't think a run at No. 1 is possible. Still, last week's rankings are an indication that MC's 17-1 record against the uber-competitive Central Valley Conference is being noticed. A three-game sweep over former top-10 opponent, COS, over the weekend should further strengthen MC's bid for No. 1.
