Guard play failed Merced College (0-3 CVC, 4-15) in a loss to West Hills on Saturday. If the Blue Devils wish to avoid sole possession of last place in the CVC, they’re going to have to fix the problem against a Columbia team that’s led by a trio of freshmen guards.
Jose Blanco (13.6 points per game), Jared Lunsford (11.8) and Mike McElroy (11.6) have all had excellent seasons for Columbia. Still, the Lumberjacks (0-3 CVC, 3-16) have struggled just as badly as MC.
Columbia has lost five straight contests and 15 of their last 17. MC hasn’t fared any better. The Blue Devils have lost six straight and 14 of 15 games.
This is just MC’s second home game since the end of November. Hopefully a good home crowd can help push them over the hump and back into the win column.
Merced College Men’s Basketball vs. Columbia
Time: 7 p.m., at MC
Records: Columbia 0-3 CVC, 3-16; MC 0-3 CVC, 4-15
Scoring Leaders: Columbia — Jose Blanco 13.6 ppg, Jared Lunsford 11.8 ppg, Mike McElroy 11.6 ppg; MC — Lavell Shipman 14.2 ppg, Logan Wiens 10.7 ppg, Erin Walker 9.1 ppg.
Outlook: Merced College needs the confidence boost of a victory, especially against a Columbia team that has struggled as much as the Blue Devils have. In three conference losses, MC has yet to turn in a full 40 minute game. Hopefully the friendly confines of the MC gym will bring that out of them.
