Late heroics lift Vols to win once again

Another night, another late-game victory.

This time it was Daniel McDonnell delivering an eighth-inning single to propel the Merced Volunteers to a 6-5 win over the Modesto Twins on Wednesday night at Merced College.

The victory came one night after the Vols defeated the Fresno Cardinals with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

"It's been torture," McDonnell said. "It feels that way. We've been doing good. We've been winning these close games."

McDonnell almost had to catch his breath as he practically sprinted to the batters box in the eighth inning when he found out he was pinch-hitting.

With two outs and runners on the corners, McDonnell hit a ball in the hole at shortstop and Modesto's Klayton Miller made a diving backhand stop. Miller bounced up, but McDonnell beat the throw to first as teammate Matt Farias cross the plate with the go-ahead run.

"When I saw him dive for the ball, I had to get there as fast as I could," McDonnell said. "I kind of rushed myself to the plate because I was so excited to get in."

Andrew Jaurique came on in relief in the top of the eighth inning and got out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out Miller, who had homered earlier in the game.

Jaurique pitched a scare-free ninth inning to pick up the win.

The Vols (13-9) jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the game.

Derek Slate and Jaurique both delivered run-scoring hits during Merced's three-run second inning.

In the third inning, Ashton Guerro plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Phillip Parga squeezed in Farias with a bunt.

Twins starter Jeremy McDonald settled down and held the Vols to just one hit the next three innings.

Meanwhile, Cody Sinar doubled in a pair of runs to cut the Merced lead to 5-4 in the fifth inning.

Evan Shorts later tied the game with an RBI double off of Matt Nunes in the seventh.

That set up McDonnell's late-game heroics.

The Volunteers won despite being outhit 10-6.

Carlo Del Real pitched six innings, giving up four runs.

Merced will be back in action tonight against the Atwater Aviators at Memorial Ballpark at 7 p.m.

The Volunteers have four games before they head to Yountville for the American Legion State Tournament.

Rollo Adams is still tweaking his lineup.

"We probably have two or three spots that are open," Adams said. "If I have to go offense-defense or defense-offense, I'll do it. I'm not a guy that plays a guy because I'm supposed to play him. I'm going to play the hot hand. They've been told that. They're auditioning right now."
