UC Merced women’s water polo standouts honored by conference
Two UC Merced women’s water polo players have earned postseason honors by the Western Water Polo Association, the conference announced Wednesday.
Senior Claudette Asenjo was named to the All-WWPA second team.
Freshman goalie Makenzie Royal received All-WWPA Freshman Team honors, the conference office announced Thursday.
Asenjo, a Merced native who played at El Capitan High and Merced College before joining UC Merced, led the Bobcats with 31 goals this season. She is the program’s all-time leading scorer, with 99 career goals.
Royal, a San Diego native, started 14 games in goal and recorded 132 saves. She also set the program’s freshman record with 29 steals and contributed offensively with three assists and a goal.
The Bobcats went 2-19 this season and were 0-6 in the WWPA in their first season at the Division II level.
UC Merced will compete in exhibition matches at the WWPA Championships this weekend in Irvine. The Bobcats are ineligible for postseason play due to NCAA transition rules.
