Betschart faces a familiar offense

MODESTO -- Golden Valley coach Jon Betschart is a familiar with the spread offense.

Betschart's junior varsity teams ran the spread the last three years at Hilmar.

Tonight, his GV team will have to find a way to slow it down against Modesto (1-2).

Kickoff is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. at Downey High.

"Their spread offense is similar to Hilmar's when Nathan Costa was there," Betschart said.

"They have a good quarterback and quick receivers. I think they threw the ball 47 times last week."

Modesto's Chris Bradley has completed 59 of 119 passes this year for 935 yards and 11 TDs.

Bradley's favorite target is Bryan Johnson, who has 20 catches for 329 yards and four touchdowns.

"We'll use a couple different coverage schemes to try to slow them down," Betschart said. "If we give up the big play, we'll be in trouble."

Golden Valley (1-2) will have Sergio Gutierrez back after he missed last week's 17-10 loss to Sonora with an ankle injury.

Gutierrez will start at quarterback with starter Jeremy Jacobo forced to sit out one game after being ejected in the Sonora game.

"The plan is to have Sergio in there for the first series and see how it goes," Betschart said.

"Matt (Martin) is going to be ready to go. If we struggle to move the ball, he'll get a chance.

"Both of them have been getting half time in practice this week."
