El Capitan High School unveils its football stadium at public ceremony
Merced’s El Capitan High School unveiled its new stadium to the public at a ceremony on Tuesday.
The new $10.1 million stadium seats just over 3,000 fans, according to Shawn Jansen of the Merced Union High School District.
“Today is a historic day for El Capitan High School,” said El Capitan head football coach Xavier Ramirez, according to a story on the school district’s website. “For the first time in school history we will have a true home field advantage, a place that belongs to us and a place we can finally call home. This is more than a stadium. This is where memories will be made, this is where battles will be fought and this is where legacies will be built.”
The stadium will be the home for football, girls flag football, soccer, track & field meets and graduation ceremonies, the school district said.
Since El Capitan opened in 2013, the football team has played most of its home games at Merced College. Construction for the stadium started in the summer of 2024.
Last month, Buhach Colony High School unveiled its news stadium to the public.
All six Merced Union High School District schools now have their own stadiums.
