CATFISH DERBY — San Joaquin County Parks and Recreation and the Delta Fly Fishers will launch this year's Catfish Derby on June 5 at Oak Grove Regional Park. Open to adults for the first time in the event's 26-year history. Approximately 1,500 lbs. of catfish will be planted prior to the derby, with additional poundage supplied by the California Dept. of Fish and Game. As always, kids age 15 years and younger fish for catfish free at Oak Grove's 10-acre lake during the event, which begins at 6:15 a.m. There is no registration fee for the event, however, a $3 fishing permit fee and valid CA. fishing license are required for those sixteen (16) years of age or over. A $5 vehicle-parking fee will also apply. All State Fish and Game laws apply. Participants must supply their own fishing equipment. Oak Grove Regional Park is located on Eight Mile Road and Interstate 5 in Stockton. Park gates will be open at 6:15 a.m., derby registration closes at 10 a.m. and the last weigh-in is at 12:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded shortly thereafter. KITE DAY — June 19 at Pacheco Pass from noon to 4 p.m. Everyone who flies a kite will receive a souvenir Kite Day button. There will be other fun activities including a 'Make Your Own Kite Free' table and free face painting, as well as Pie Eating Contests and Bubble Gum Blowing Contests. Plus, there will be interesting tables to check out, including nature tables and a 'sun and wind' table, as well as crafts for the kids. Families are encouraged to bring a kite, hats and/or sunscreen, drinking water, lawn chairs, and a picnic lunch. (There is no drinking water at Pacheco State Park.)
