An inmate was shot and wounded at U.S. Penitentiary Atwater on Tuesday, federal corrections officials reported.
The incident happened after two inmates started to assault another inmate in the prison's recreation yard about 12:45 p.m., according to a news release from Kristi Rodriguez, a public information officer at the prison.
The inmates didn't comply with staff orders to stop the assault even after a warning shot was fired, according to Rodriguez.
An inmate was then shot by staff and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to Rodriguez. Another inmate was assessed for his injuries and treated at the prison.

No staff members were injured during the incident, Rodriguez reported.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations was notified of the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
No one at the prison was available to answer follow-up questions Tuesday after a news release was issued about 5:30 p.m.
