City officials are gearing up for Cap ’n’ Town 2014, Merced’s largest downtown outdoor celebration and block party.
The annual all-ages event celebrates all of Merced’s graduates and honors the community’s educational excellence, according to a city press release.
The event will be from 5 to 10 p.m. May 16 on Main Street, between M Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. It will feature food, music, exhibits, arts, crafts booths, fun for kids, and a car show.
Organizers this week revealed some of the bands who are scheduled to perform during the event, which for the first time will incorporate three stages. Scheduled bands include Feeling Gravity’s Pull, The Banshees and the Danny Garza Band.
A variety of dance groups are also scheduled to appear, such as Sol Del Valle, Denisa’s School of Dance and the South Pacific Dance Company.
The first Cap ’n’ Town was held in 2009 to welcome first lady Michelle Obama to Merced and celebrate the graduation of the first four-year class at UC Merced. Since then, the 5-year-old event has expanded to included graduates of all age levels, from all schools.
“I think it’s important to celebrate their achievements and all of their hard work,” said Karen Baker, one of the organizers. “We’re just expanding with the success we’ve had over the years.”
This year’s event will also feature the Kiwanis Club’s Kiddieland Play Area for children.
