Woman struck by train in Winton, dies
An unidentified woman died Monday after she was struck by a train in Winton, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The woman apparently was pushing a shopping cart when she was hit by an Amtrak train in Winton, around Winton Way and Santa Fe Drive on Monday afternoon, Sgt. Delray Shelton said in a brief statement.
Few details were immediately available as the investigation was just getting underway.
The incident was reported at 1:38 p.m.
The train, which runs from from Bakersfield to Oakland, was carrying 254 passengers. There were no injuries on board, according to Vernae Graham, Amktrak spokeswoman.
The train was stopped on the tracks until 4:25 p.m., Graham said.
Deputies were working to identify the woman Monday afternoon.
