Oak Ridge Boys still energized as they harmonize
Expect the Oak Ridge Boys to “oom poppa, oom poppa, mow mow” Friday at Merced Theatre.
The four-part harmonies of the country and gospel singers include those lyrics from hit “Elvira” among other classics from their more than 40 years in the business.
The Boys are set for a concert at 8 p.m. Friday, June 24, at Merced Theatre, 301 W. Main St.
They’ll bring about four decades of charted singles with them, including hits such as “Bobbie Sue” and “Fancy Free.” They’ve earned 12 gold albums, a platinum album, and a double platinum album. The awards all led up to their 2015 induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
We’re still having fun doing this. We love what we do. Getting on stage and bringing our music to people is still what we live for.
Bass singer Richard Sterban of the Oak Ridge Boys
“I feel like I can do what I do on stage just as good now as I could 20 years ago,” said tenor Joe Bonsall, 68. “I plan to be rockin’ my tail off out there as long as I’m healthy. The people who come out, who bring their families to see us, deserve everything I’ve got.”
The high-energy stage show remains the heart and soul of what they do, the quartet says.
Bass singer Richard Sterban said the stage show is to thank for the band’s longevity. “We’re still having fun doing this,” he said. “We love what we do. Getting on stage and bringing our music to people is still what we live for.”
After Merced, the Boys have shows in Arcadia and Visalia before they head east out of California.
Tickets are $58, $45 or $34, and can be purchased online at www.mercedtheatre.org or by phone at 209-381-0500.
