Mariaelena Gonzalez: Reporter should have talked to professors
Re: “UC Merced students ask for more Chicano Studies professors” (Page A1, May 6): the article does not provide an accurate representation of the Chicano Studies program at UC Merced.
While, I am excited that you would cover student activism on the UC Merced campus, I was disappointed that your reporter did not speak with faculty associated with the Chicano Studies program. There were five courses that satisfied Chicano Studies minor requirements offered this year by faculty associated with the UC Merced Chicano Studies program. This semester I taught one of those courses. Many faculty at UC Merced are working to expand the number and types of courses offered at UC Merced in order to promote an interdisciplinary learning environment that reflects the diversity of experiences of not only our faculty and student body but of the community.
