Merced College to show ‘The Taming of the Shrew’
“The Taming of the Shrew” opens at the Merced College Theater at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with several other performances to follow.
One of William Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, “Shrew” will feature a cast of more than a dozen students when it opens at the 3600 M St. campus. The opening night performance will be followed with a dessert and coffee reception in the theater lobby.
The cast also will perform a 7:30 p.m. show Saturday, as well as shows March 26, 27 and 28. A matinee performance is planned 2 p.m. March 29.
Written between 1590 and 1592, “Shrew” is an examination of the “war between the sexes.” Known for its fast-paced dialogue, the play features banter, puns and off-color humor.
Merced College’s Theatre Department is a program that features an associate of arts degree, and is transferable to a California State University campus, according to a news release.
The program features courses in acting, theater history, stage design and costume design. In addition to a production and performance schedule of three to four plays per year, the Merced College Theatre Society puts on additional performances outside the college.
Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for students, seniors and military personnel. A $5 student discount is offered for the Thursday performance.
Tickets may be purchased at the theater box office and in the Merced College bookstore.
