Shakespeare play
“The Taming of the Shrew” opens at the Merced College Theater at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the 3600 M St. campus. The show also has 7:30 p.m. performances on Saturday and March 26-28. A matinee performance is planned 2 p.m. March 29. Tickets are $10 general, $8 students, seniors and military personnel. A $5 student discount is offered for Thursday performances only. Exhibits at the arts center
The Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Main St., has opened an exhibit titled “Emergency/Emergence: Art After War.” Curated by Eli-Jelly Schapiro, it features the work of artists Aaron Hughes, Ehren Tool, Mark Pinto and Drew Cameron, who are all Iraq War veterans. For more information, visit
Exhibition opening
Merced College Art Gallery will present an exhibition of painting and print by Arnold Anthony Orosco from Monday to April 16. A reception for the artist will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Orozco is a native of Southern California whose work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout the country. The public is welcome to meet the artist and visit the gallery. Visits to the art gallery are free, and parking is enforced. Merced College is located at 3600 M St.
Merced Camera Club

Events at Kewl Cats
There’s karaoke at Kewl Cats from 9 p.m. until close Monday through Thursday. Friday nights have DJs, and live bands perform Saturday nights. For more information, visit kewlcats.net.
Social dance
The city of Merced will host an East Coast swing dance lesson, followed by a social dance from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Merced Senior Community Center, 755 W. 15th St. Cost is $8 and door prizes and refreshments will be available. For more information, call (209) 723-0839.
Old-time barn dance
A barn dance featuring live music featuring the Home Stilled String Band, with mandolins, fiddles and more as well dance caller Nick Cuccia, is at 6:30 p.m. March 28 at the American Legion Hall, 939 W. Main St., Merced. Veterans will provide a no-host bar. Admission is free. Merced College and UC Merced students are encouraged to attend.
World Dance course
A World Dance course is being offered through Merced College Community Services and will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Merced College in Gym-4. The cost is $40 per person per six-week session, the first of which began Wednesday. Applicants can register for free online at www.mercedcommunityservices.com.
South Pacific dance lessons
The South Pacific Dance Company is teaching traditional dance and music from the cultures of Hawaii and Tahiti. The school is now enrolling for the spring semester, ages 4 and older, beginners to advanced. Males and females are both welcome. Classes are held at Creation Station, 2408 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. In addition, the Soul Power Dance Crew is now taking enrollment for an eight-week session in hip-hop dance for age 7 through teens.
