The Merced County Office of Education is taking applications for its Summer Performing Arts Program.

MCOE, in partnership with the Merced Union High School District and the Merced County Education Foundation, is hosting the program that will culminate in several performances of a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.”

The summer program will be held at Buhach Colony High School. Registration is open to all Merced County students entering fourth to eighth grades and is first come, first served. There is a $60 fee per student with breakfast and lunch provided each day.

Rehearsal begins June 15 and runs through July 25, with performances scheduled for July 23-25.

Participating students meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Buhach Colony Theatre, where they take classes in set design and construction, prop building, costume design and makeup, as well as performing in the production. Classes are taught by high school district theater instructors.

There is a mandatory parent meeting at 9 a.m. June 15 at the Buhach Colony High School Theatre, 1800 Buhach Road in Atwater.
