Twang under the twilight at Playhouse Merced fundraiser
Merced’s downtown was transformed into Nashville, Tenn., on Saturday as Playhouse Merced put on its biggest fundraiser of the year.
A Night at the Opry was the theme for this year’s version of the annual gala, which took place in Bob Hart Square. Organizers said more than 300 people bought tickets.
Brothers Rob and Joe Hypes, Playhouse Merced’s artistic and development directors, respectively, served as masters of ceremonies. The performances focused primarily on classic country acts such as Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and others who’ve graced the stage of the Grand Ole Opry.
While funds from the gala help Playhouse Merced put on productions throughout the season, the money also helps the theater with its community programs. For example, Playhouse Merced has theater classes for young people, after-school programs and tour programs for elementary schools. The volunteers and staff also perform at schools.
Playhouse recently announced its lineup for the upcoming season, which kicks off at the end of the month.
Also, a special performance of the first show of the year – “Evita” – is planned to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Merced County. The doors open for that show at 6:15 p.m. Aug. 27 at Playhouse Merced, 452 W. Main St.
Tickets for the special show are $50 at 209-722-9922.
