Fans of Modesto native Jeremy Renner and his show “Mayor of Kingstown” will be happy to know it’s set to return for a fifth season.
They may be less happy to learn it also will be the last one for the Paramount+ streamer.
The crime drama finished its fourth season in late December and, according to a story on Deadline.com, the news was announced shortly thereafter.
In addition, there will be only eight episodes, down from the usual 10, the story said.
It will pick up in the aftermath of a bloody showdown last year. “The season ended with the gang war in Kingstown escalating to a violent climax in the finale,” according to Deadline.
No season five premiere date has been set.
Renner, an Oscar-nominated actor and Beyer High School graduate, plays the lead character in “Kingstown,” Mike McLusky. The series is about a powerful family in a town dependent on the prison system.
Renner also is known for his longtime role as superhero Hawkeye in the Marvel universe.
He’s been nominated twice for Academy Awards — best lead actor in 2010 for “The Hurt Locker” and best supporting actor in 2011 for “The Town.”
Renner posted about “Kingstown’s” fifth season renewal on Facebook earlier this month: “I find myself in deep gratitude this gorgeous morning. After a rebirth, today announcing a renewal of @mayorofkingstown season 5 …what a blessing …. And it’s all because of the amazing dedicated fans Thank you.”
