A Merced County K-9 officer found 13 pounds of heroin and 9 pounds of cocaine being transported on Interstate 5, the California Highway Patrol reported on Friday.

Officers stopped a Mini Cooper Countryman about 3:45 p.m. Thursday on I-5 south of Nees Avenue, CHP said. Officers called in the K-9, Bruce, to sniff the car from the outside.

During the search, Bruce located a hidden compartment containing 13 pounds of heroin and 9 pounds of cocaine, officers said.

The driver, Carlos Soto, 31, and passenger Jorge Verduzco, 27, both of Los Angeles, were arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail, CHP said.
