Merced County restaurant damaged in New Year’s Day fire

Firefighters responded to a structure fire at a restaurant on New Year’s Day in Winton, according to Cal Fire officials.

The blaze was reported at 6:30 a.m. at the La Sonrisa Bar and Grill in the 7000 block of Winton Way in Winton, according to a news release.

After reporting heavy smoke showing from the commercial structure upon their arrival, firefighters extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to the remainder of the building and property, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported in the fire, which caused moderate damage to the business, according to the release. Fire officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A total of four fire engines, two water tenders, one medium rescue and two battalion chiefs responded to the blaze.
