‘Reconsider that first female coach.’ Ann Coulter mocks 49ers Katie Sowers after loss

After the Kansas City Chiefs beat out the San Francisco 49ers for the Super Bowl ring, conservative pundit Ann Coulter mocked 49ers coach Katie Sowers, who’s the first female and gay coach in the Super Bowl.

Coulter, who appeared to root for the Chiefs, tweeted shortly after the 49ers lost the game.

“Maybe 49ers should reconsider that FIRST FEMALE COACH,” she wrote.

Coulter’s comments sparked backlash, and people came to Sowers’ defense.

Twitter user Janina Solo wrote: “Women support women. (Period) It’s shameful that you get to belittle what you don’t understand. My daughter is 6 and wants to be a coach and she looks up to @KatieSowers. I think it’s amazing she gets to see Katie and her accomplishments.”

“Way to be supportive,” another Twitter user Kaite Stover wrote. “You understand Katie Sowers helped her team get INTO #SuperBowlLIV right? No small feat. And while I’m sure losing sucks, @49ers played a TERRIFIC game WITH KATIE’S HELP.”

Sowers hasn’t responded directly to Coulter’s comments but tweeted about the Super Bowl loss on Feb. 3.

“I wanted this so bad for my guys... for my dad,” she wrote. “Congrats to the @Chiefs... please as you comment to my players or staff members, remember we are all human. As @TheEllenShow says, Be Kind. This loss has unfortunately reminded me of the hatred in this world.”

Sowers became the second female coach in the NFL when she was hired by 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan to be an offensive assistant, according to KNTV.

“No matter what you do in life, one of the most important things is to be true to who you are,” Sowers told Outsports in 2017. “There are so many people who identify as LGBT in the NFL, as in any business, that do not feel comfortable being public about their sexual orientation.”

Microsoft honored Sowers’ milestone in the company’s Super Bowl commercial, according to Adweek.

“I want anyone who sees my story, not just women, to know that anything is possible if you truly believe it and work for it,” Sowers said in a statement about the ad. “Your gender, your sexual orientation, your skin color — those are all just a part of what makes you who you are. Those things should never limit how far you can go in this world.”
